Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance with X-ray Inspection

The biggest challenge to your quality assurance is the one you can't see – the hidden defect or contaminant that lies within your product packaging or deep within the product itself. For the pharmaceutical industry, there really is only one way to see beyond the obvious: x-ray inspection.

The use of x-ray inspection systems in the pharmaceutical industry for product safety and quality control is virtually limitless.

Here are some examples of pharmaceutical manufacturers who installed METTLER TOLEDO Safeline x-ray systems on their production lines.

Perfect Tablets and Blister Packs

When Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, LLC, the largest drug manufacturer in the world, noticed that one of their over-the-counter blister packaging line had a problem with broken tablets and occasionally crushed or folded blister packs inside the packaging they decided to install an x-ray inspection system. The installed InspireX R20 x-ray system not only detects and rejects multiple contaminants, but also verifies product and package integrity.

Product Safety of Drugs in foil-laminated Film

Contract Pharmacal Corporation (CPC) develops, manufactures and packages premium pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements for brands such as Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline. To assure outstanding product safety, CPC recently installed five AdvanCheK x-ray inspection systems which inspect products in a foil-laminated film. The x-ray systems identify foreign particles such as metal, glass, plastic and a variety of other objects and automatically remove contaminated products from the packaging line.

Sterility of Wound Dressings

Advanced Medical Solutions (AMS), one of the leading suppliers to the global wound care market, relies on x-ray inspection to ensure sterility and safety of their products. Checking the seal integrity of dressing sachets and ensuring the product is free of contaminants is key to providing high-quality products. The installed InspireX R20 x-ray system automatically calibrates after each inspected sachet, ensuring maximum sensitivity of detection is achieved for up to 500 dressings a minute.

Detection of Metal Contaminants in Metalized Film Pouches

Pharma Tech Industries (PTI), a contract manufacturer and packer of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and personal care products, uses an AdvanCheK x-ray system to consistently achieve their high quality standards. PTI chose the AdvanCheK based on the quality of the equipment, the reputation of METTLER TOLEDO Safeline and the responsiveness of the service team. The x-ray system at PTI inspects OTC and prescription pharmaceuticals – powdered products packed in pouches made of metalized film. The ability to detect metal contamination through the metalized film lead to PTI’s decision to install this x-ray system, though it detects glass, stone, rubber and other contaminants too.
