Background
Intermediate and end products in the pharmaceuticals industry are frequently won from a clear solution by means of batch crystallization. For instance, to initiate a crystallization process, weak acid is pumped into the crystallizer in order to adjust the pH value, or the solution may be cooled, until the first crystals begin to form. At this point of time, the so-called cloud point, dosing of acid must be interrupted or the temperature program changed in order to prevent spontaneous, uncontrolled crystallization.
