Background
An amine produced by synthesis in the pharmaceutical industry is present in the form of a hydrochloride salt and is to be precipitated from a clear solution through the addition of caustic soda according to the following reaction equation:

RR' - NH * HCl + NaOH → RR' - NH ↓ + NaCl + H₂O

Samples of the precipitated amine revealed strong and unacceptable fluctuations in product purity.

Precipitation conditions, solvent composition, concentration and dosage rate of the caustic soda all have an influence on the quality of the intermediate product. To optimize this reaction step, the use of an online turbidity measurement system has provided important information. .....
