Process Analytics - «Application Note» Background
Today almost all chemical pulp mills recover and reuse their chemicals. The chemical solution fed into the digester to decompose the wood into fibres and residual components is called white liquor. After it has been in the digester it carries all the residual components, and is called black liquor, because it is "dirty".
The black liquor goes to the recovery area. Any spills of black liquor are collected in the surface drain. Once it is in the surface drain, it could get to the wastewater treatment plant. There are two reasons to make sure that black liquor does not end up in the wastewater treatment plant:
- For environmental reasons, because the black liquor is a heavy burden
on the wastewater treatment plant.
- For economical reasons, since with the lost black liquor a significant amount
of chemicals leave the system and cannot be recovered….
